Dear Volunteer,

 

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at our free tax preparation sites. We’re looking forward to working together to help individuals and families find ways to make the most of their money.

 

To volunteer, please be willing to:

  • Commit to volunteer for at least five (5) shifts, or 24 total hours, from January 21 - March 10, 2012
  • Complete required training workshops and applicable certification
  • Communicate regularly using email and Internet with program staff
  • Honor volunteer policies and site procedures

 

Please complete the following steps:

  • Review CA$H’s volunteer Job Descriptions to choose your volunteer role;
  • Verify that you are available to complete the required Training for your volunteer role;
  • Review Event Dates to determine your availability to volunteer at five or more sites;
  • Register to become a volunteer using our online Volunteer Scheduling Web site;

(Note: if you volunteered last year, your temporary password is the word “cash”. Please do not sign up for a new account. Contact nevans@unitedwaygp.org if you cannot remember your username.)

TRAINING  (all held at United Way: 1 Canal Plaza, 3rd Floor, Portland)

 

Tax Preparer Training

The following is a list of requirements to become a volunteer tax preparer: 

  •  (Required for new and returning volunteer tax preparers) IRS Link & Learn Basic Certification (up to 20 hrs)—please review and complete the following
  • (Required for new tax preparers) New Tax Preparer Orientation (2 hrs): pre-certification training—attend one of the following
    • Saturday, 12/17: 9-11 a.m.
    • Monday, 12/19: 6-8 p.m.
    • Tuesday, 12/20: 6-8 p.m.
  •  (Optional but encouraged for new tax preparers) New Tax Preparer Study Hall (2 hrs): review and practice common tax site scenarios
    • Thursday, December 29: 6-8 p.m.
    • Friday, December 30: 6-8 p.m.
  •  (Optional but encouraged for new tax preparers) Federal tax law and tax site case studies (4 hrs): in-depth review of tax site scenarios and the soft skills needed to interact with clients
    • Saturday, 1/7: 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
  •  (Required for new tax preparers, optional for returning tax preparers) TaxWise tax preparation software (2 hrs), need to have passed Link & Learn Basic test—attend at least one of the following
    • Monday, 1/9: 6-8 p.m.
    • Tuesday, 1/10: 6-8 p.m.
    • Wednesday, 1/11: 6-8 p.m.
    • Thursday, 1/12: 6-8 p.m.
    • Saturday, 1/14: 9-11 a.m.
  •  (Required for new tax preparers, optional for returning tax preparers) State of Maine tax law (3 hrs)—attend one of the following
    • Saturday, 1/14: 1-4 p.m. (tentative)
    • Monday, 1/16: 6-9 p.m.
    • Tuesday, 1/17: 6-9 p.m.
    • Wednesday, 1/18: 6-9 p.m.

 Coach Training

To volunteer as a Coach, you will need to attend one of the following training sessions:

  • Saturday, 1/7: 1-3 p.m. (tentative)
  • Monday, 1/9: 6-8 p.m. (tentative)
  • Tuesday, 1/10: 6-8 p.m. (tentative)
  • Wednesday, 1/11: 6-8 p.m. (tentative)

 

Interpreter

To volunteer as an Interpreter, you are not required to attend a training session. You are welcome to attend a Coach training (see above). Please contact nevans@unitedwaygp.org or 347-2326 if you are interested in volunteering as an Interpreter.

 

Scheduler

To volunteer as a Scheduler, you are not required to attend a training session. Please contact nevans@unitedwaygp.org or 347-2326 if you are interested in volunteering as a Scheduler.

 

EVENT DATES and LOCATIONS (all on METRO route) 

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5-9 p.m. at United Way of Greater Portland
  • Saturdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at various locations in Portland and Westbrook (addresses listed in January)

 

VOLUNTEER SHIFTS

Sign up to be a CA$H volunteer on our volunteer Web site: cashgp.volunteerhub.com. Please do not place “www” in front of the URL address. You may also click on the following button to access the site.

VolunteerHub

  • New volunteers: register as a "new user", complete our volunteer survey, and sign up for training sessions.
  • Returning volunteers: please do not create a new account. Use “cash” (you may change it once you are on the site) as your password. If you forgot your username, please contact nevans@unitedwaygp.org. Once you sign in, visit the "your account" link on the top right side of the page to update your contact information and complete our survey.

Please note:

  • You will schedule your volunteer shifts here in January.
    All emails will be sent from this Web site, therefore you must add the following email address to your email contact list and “safe/not junk” email list to be sure you receive the various notifications: noreply@volunteerhub.com.

VOLUNTEER POLICIES 

  • If you cannot make your shift, please contact the Site Coordinator at 347-2328 ASAP to find coverage.
  • Food: Beverages (coffee/water) and a snack or light meal (donut/bagel/granola bar/sandwich/pizza) will be provided at the sites.
  • Storm Closings: The Site Coordinator will contact you when a site will be closed. Cancellations will be made by 2 p.m. on weekdays, and 6 a.m. on Saturdays. This information will also be posted: on-air at WCSH and online at www.wcsh6.com. Site Coordinator voicemail: 347-2328.
